They range from social workers to business professionals to police officers to nurses to college administrators.
They are the 2013 class of inductees into the Keuka College chapter of Alpha Lambda Sigma (ASL), the national honor society for adult students.
ASL recognizes the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. It is dedicated to the advancement of scholarship and recognizes high scholastic achievement in an adult student’s career.
Ten Accelerated Studies for Adults Program (ASAP) students and one graduate were inducted into Chi Alpha Lambda, Keuka’s local chapter, Aug. 9:
Dr. Frank Colaprete, ASAP associate professor of criminal justice, delivered the keynote address. He challenged the inductees to reflect inward.
“Moments like these defy description and come to define a life’s work and a life’s purpose in a very special way,” he said.
In its purest form, leadership exists to “enhance and advance the lives of others” and is “the capacity to translate vision into reality,” Colaprete said, challenging honorees to transfer their knowledge to others, particularly as mentors.
Colaprete was one of four honorary inductees. Others included Dr. Anne Weed, vice president of academic affairs; Ann Tuttle, professor of management and interim chair of the division of business and management; and Dr. Debra Gates, associate professor and chair of the Division of Nursing.
In addition, Sgt. Kevin Hall of the Webster Police Department, a Class of 2007 criminal justice graduate, received special recognition for his work as a first responder in the Dec. 24 tragedy on Lake Road in Webster. Sgt. Hall was the second officer to arrive after gunman William Spengler Jr. opened fire on firefighters and other first responders who reported to the home he set on fire.
Hall received the award from Officer Randy Kuhn Jr., a Newark police officer who holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice from Keuka.
