Nursing Garners CCNE Accreditation

The nursing program at Keuka College has earned a five-year accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

The CCNE is an autonomous arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and is the nation’s leading accrediting agency for baccalaureate and master’s level nursing programs.

“We are delighted that our programs have met the highest national standards of nursing education quality,” said Dr. Sparki Mangels, chair of the Division of Nursing.

Keuka’s nursing program was formerly accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

The genesis of nursing at Keuka can be traced back to a campus visit by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt Feb. 16, 1938.

Two years later, with the United States on the brink of war, Keuka President J. Hillis Miller sent a letter to Roosevelt. In it, he asked what training the College should provide its students due to the dangerous developments overseas.

The first lady urged Miller to set up courses in nursing and begin to work with the Red Cross. The College took her advice to heart: in 1943, Keuka unveiled its highly acclaimed nursing program.

Today, the College offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing through the Accelerated Studies for Adults Program (ASAP). Students take classes one night a week at hospitals and community colleges across New York state and earn their degrees in less than two years.
