Rochester Resident, Eastridge Senior Mackenzie Meyer Selected Experiential Learner of the Month

Mackenzie Meyer, a resident of Rochester and senior at Eastridge High School, received Keuka College’s Experiential Learner of the Month Award for January.

Keuka, the national leader in experiential, hands-on learning, established the program to honor high school students whose commitment to experiential, hands-on learning has made a difference in their communities.

Meyer will receive a partial academic fellowship to Keuka and qualify for the Experiential Learner of the Year Award, which carries a full academic fellowship to the College.

Meyer was nominated for the award by Jeremy Bozzelli, consultant teacher, and Amy Mulvehill, special education teacher/case manager at Eastridge.

“Based on her leadership, character, community involvement, and academic excellence, I believe Mackenzie will be a great asset to Keuka College,” said Mulvehill.

Meyer, who plans to become a veterinarian, has already racked up some 300 hours of experience in the field, first as a volunteer and now in a paid position. In addition to her work at the veterinarian practice, she has volunteered as a kennel helper at All Cats Care Center and wildlife rehabilitator.

Meyer has also donated her time and talents to Camp Wellness, a summer camp for disabled children, and Operation Friendship, a day program for disadvantaged adults. She was awarded the United States Presidential Volunteer Service Award at the bronze, silver and gold levels.

A Red Cross-certified water safety instructor, she teaches swimming and serves as a lifeguard for the Town of Irondequoit and the West Irondequoit School District.

A member of National Honor Society, Meyer has made the high honor roll every semester since sixth grade. She is a member of the swimming team and concert band at Eastridge.

The Experiential Learner of the Month Award-winner is featured on television stations throughout central, western, and northern New York state, as well as the Southern Tier.

The participating stations include WTVH, Channel 5, Syracuse (CBS); WHAM, Channel 13, Rochester (ABC); WWNY, Channel 7, Watertown (CBS); and WBNG, Channel 12, Binghamton (CBS).
