Simone to Speak at Mid-Year Conferral of Degrees

Dr. Albert J. Simone, president emeritus of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), will deliver the address at Keuka College’s mid-year conferral of degrees Sunday, Dec. 11.

The ceremony begins at 1 p.m. in the Weed Physical Arts Center gymnasium.

Simone served as RIT’s 8th president (1992-2007) and during his tenure numerous academic programs were established in response to changing global needs and opportunities in areas of RIT’s strengths. The Albert J. Simone Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, established in 2007, recognizes his contribution to academics and strong support of local business.

Simone is chairman of Greater Rochester Enterprise, a regional economic development organization that supports business attraction and expansion as well as entrepreneurship and innovation throughout Greater Rochester. Community organizations that have benefitted from his talents include High Technology of Rochester, Rochester Business Alliance, and Hillside Children’s Center, among others.

Prior to coming to RIT, Simone was president of the University of Hawaii system and chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Manoa for nine years.

A native of Boston, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Tufts University and Ph.D. in economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Simone is the author of numerous books and articles, and has served on dozens of public and private boards over the years, chairing a number of them. He has received numerous awards, including the Entrepreneurial American Leadership Award from Partners for Livable Communities in 2006, YMCA of Rochester and Monroe County Racial Justice Award in 2005, and the Rochester Rotary Award in 2004.

Another highlight of the mid-year conferral of degrees will be the presentation of the Adjunct Professor of the Year Award.
