No Stranger to Hands-on Experience

Molly Greene, a resident of Varysburg and senior at Letchworth Central School, received Keuka College’s Experiential Learner of the Month Award for September.

Keuka, the national leader in experiential, hands-on learning, established the program to honor high school students whose commitment to experiential, hands-on learning has made a difference in their communities.

Greene will receive a partial academic fellowship to Keuka and qualify for the Experiential Learner of the Year Award, which carries a full academic fellowship to the College.

Greene, who wants to become an elementary school teacher, was nominated for the award by Daniel Woitaszek, a counselor at Letchworth. He said Greene has garnered some signigficant hands-on experience.

“Molly was an elementary teacher’s aide during the 2010-11 school year,” said Woitaszek. “She led a group of 5 to 6 kindergarten students daily. The level of the students’ reading went up as the school year progressed. Molly told me that she found the experience so rewarding that she knows in her heart that becoming a teacher is where her passion lies.”

Greene is also a member of Big Buddy, a mentoring club where she works with elementary school students once a week. She also volunteers as a seeing-eye dog trainer in the Guiding Eyes for the Blind program.

She was recognized for her volunteer work by earning second place in the community service category at the Wyoming County Fair.

Greene is a three-sport performer at Letchworth—volleyball, basketball and track—and captains the volleyball and track teams.

The Experiential Learner of the Month Award-winner is featured on television stations throughout central, western, and northern New York state, as well as the Southern Tier.

The participating stations include WTVH, Channel 5, Syracuse (CBS); WHAM, Channel 13, Rochester (ABC); WWNY, Channel 7, Watertown (CBS); and WBNG, Channel 12, Binghamton (CBS).
